BUSINESS BYTE: Laudat team wins 1st FFI trump card tournament in Dominica

The first ever Fernandez Black label rum trump card tournament was held at the police headquarters in Roseau on the 12th of April, 2015. The tournament is an initiative of Fine Foods Inc, local agents for Angostura Fernandez Black Label Rum  to highlight the card game

Trump cards or the more preferred local term “trumps” is a game with a trump card, played by four players in teams of two. The basic play is similar to Whist, i.e. each player plays one card, the highest card of the suit led wins the trick, unless someone has played a card of the trump suit. The game is played island wide in many communities such as Marigot, Woodford Hill, Colihaut, Roseau and the Valley.

Players from around Dominica turned up for the 1st tournament and it was a keenly contested tournament with many lead changes and unexpected outcomes. The experienced pair of Lynard Henderson and Edward Augustine from Vieille Case breezed through to the final where they met the pair of cousins Micah and Kimani Rolle from Laudat, who called themselves “Rolly and The Rolly Cats”.

The final between the Rolle cousins and Henderson / Augustine team saw a fast start by the Rolle cousins, with 143 points after 2 games, in their pursuit of 500 points to take home the championship. The next 2 games saw a fight back by Henderson and Augustine but the Rolle pair was just too good on the day and ran away with the championship by a margin of 96 points. Final scores:  Rolle/ Rolle 502, Henderson/Augustine 406.

The winners walked away with $500, a trophy and drinks; the runners up got  $250 a trophy and drinks.

Congratulations to the winners Micah Rolle and Kimani Rolle  and runners-up Lynard Henderson and Leon Augustine.
